Week 2 in fashion and textiles practices

For today’s presentation I have been choosing to do a research about bustles.

Victorian bustles dresses 1881

Is remarkably interesting how European people came up with this idea by seeing a black woman who was different of their women. Thinking that their shape of the body looks better, Alexander Douglas implemented the bustles as a body modification in 1857. After almost 10 years they become popular all over the world. Today bustles are only being used only in couture fashion as they are not amazingly comfortable.

I really like this body modification but sadly from this point of view, I do not live in that period so I will be choosing the oversized shoulders as my body modification for the next collection because I want to empower the woman trough my clothes. I was always fascinated about the oversized sleeves or shoulder pads. I was surprised to find out from my research that shoulder pads are inspired from the equipment of the American football players, but they were implemented in woman’s fashion in 1930s. With women taking positions in new professions, they needed a new look to fit in with the male-dominated industries.

For the next week we need to find three inspirational words, create collages and mood boards for each of them and prepare a presentation to include all those inspirational shapes or textures.
